Course description

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and is designed to complement the level 2 training programme in health and safety. It is aimed at supervisors, owners of small businesses, team leaders and anyone who has responsibility for the health and safety of others.

Summary of course syllabus

The course takes place over 3 days and there is a 2 hour multiple-choice psychometrically valid test (pen & paper or “on-line”) on a separate day.


  • Concepts of health and safety (people at risk; incidence of illness & accidents; costs of poor health & safety)
  • Accidents in the workplace (nature of accidents; near misses; reporting & investigating; key causes & prevention—slips, trips, falls, equipment, fire, electricity, manual handling)
  • Ill health in the workplace (nature of illness & disease; monitoring of health/illness; key causes & prevention—hazardous substances, noise, ergonomics, stress, violence at work, alcohol & drugs, smoking)
  • Legal provisions (Health & Safety at Work Act responsibilities; regulations & codes of practice; penalties; working with enforcement officers, sources of information)
  • Health and safety organisation & management (introduction to management; risk assessment; auditing & monitoring; investigating incidents; keeping records)
  • Supervising health and safety (monitoring health & safety; motivating & encouraging improvements; training needs & techniques; working with employee representatives; handling conflict; working with the management team)

What skills will candidates acquire?

Successful completion of the course and examination will enable candidates to:


  • Play an active part in monitoring health & safety practices
  • Take an active part in some on job training
  • Supervise workers effectively in general aspects of health & safety
  • Identify the need for risk assessment and participate in the process
  • Encourage safe practices
  • Assist management in the formulation of health & safety policies & instructions etc
