Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace

Course description

This level 4 course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). It is aimed at managers, supervisors, owners of small businesses, and anyone who has responsibility for the overall management of health and safety.


Summary of course syllabus

The course takes place over 7 days and there is a 3 hour written examination (on a separate day) and 2 workplace assignments.

  • Workplace safety (design criteria; employees’ facilities; electrical supplies; work equipment; fire safety; first aid)
  • Occupational health & hygiene (definitions & conventions; health hazards; toxicity; human responses; occupational exposure limits; hierarchy of controls; health surveillance; noise; radiation; stress; stress reduction strategies; health promotion initiatives)
  • Safe systems of work (general issues; manual handling operations; work equipment; DSE; arrangements for non-employees; emergency & contingency arrangements; health & safety policies; hazards & risk assessments)
  • Safety management (Auditing & QA; education & training)
  • Legislation (Acts; Regulations; ACOPS; powers of enforcement officers; enforcement procedures; safety reps/committees;

What skills will candidates acquire?

Successful completion of the course, examination and workplace assignments will enable candidates to:

  • Take a leading rôle in conducting risk assessments
  • Take a leading rôle in the preparation & review of health & safety policies
  • Play an active part in monitoring health & safety practices
  • Take an active part in some on job training
  • Supervise workers effectively in general aspects of health & safety
  • Encourage safe practices
