Certificate in Risk Assessment Principles and Practice
Course description This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and is designed to complement the level 2 training programme in health and safety. It is aimed at anyone who has a responsibility to conduct health & safety risk assessments. Summary of course syllabus The course takes place over 2 days and assessment is based on the successful completion of a practical workplace assignment.
- General introduction (main causes of injuries/ill health; costs of accidents/ill health to employers, employees & society; accidents; occupational health & safety; accident reporting)
- Principles of risk assessment (reasons for using risk assessment; hazards, risks & control measures; methods for quantifying risks; risk assessor skills)
- Legislation (Health & Safety at Work Act; Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations; enforcement & penalties)
- Risk Assessment in practice (stages in risk assessment; identifying hazards; identifying people/items at risk; selecting appropriate control measures; recording, monitoring & revising assessments)
- Summary (costs & benefits of implementing risk assessment programme; risk assessments and other management/quality issues; self evaluation after risk assessments)
What skills will candidates acquire? Successful completion of the course and assignment will enable candidates to: - Contribute to the risk assessment programmes in the workplace
- Conduct risk assessments (assuming they have required technical knowledge of work activities)
- Organise & implement a risk assessment programme where this has not already been started
- Participate in the identification of specific training needs
- Assist employers in meeting legal requirements and promote improved standards of health and safety in the workplace
